How to use Flax Eco-Bedding?

First time use:

  • Remove the old bedding and clean the stable thoroughly.

  • Concrete or paved floors should be hosed down.

  • Spread some flax straw on the still wet floor

  • Spread more flax straw on this first layer so as to create thick bedding. In the beginning the height of the mattress should be 5-7 cm.

As a rule:

4 bales are needed for a box of 3 x 3 m

6 bales are needed for a box of 4 x 4 m

During the first week, a slow build-up of the mattress takes place; during this process, the tread in bottom layer serves as a warmth insulator and urine binder, while the top layer keeps dry and loose.

Daily:

  • Remove the horse-droppings with a pitchfork

  • Rake the upper layer even

Weekly:

  • Remove the wet bedding from the spot(s) where the animal usually urinates.

  • Spread ½ to 1 new bale of flax straw every week.

While doing so, the bottom layer of the litter should not be loosened or turned around (once oxygen enters into the bottom layer, it causes development of ammonia).

Every 12 weeks the bedding should be completely removed, the stable cleaned thoroughly, and new flax straw should be spread
