Flax is a food and fiber crop that is grown in cooler regions of the world. Flax plant is cultivated for its seed (linseed) and for textile fibre made from its stalks.

Flax fiber is used for making linen fabrics. Coarser grades are used for the manufacturing of twine and rope, and historically for canvas and webbing equipment. Flax fiber is a raw material used in the high-quality paper industry for the use of printed banknotesand rolling paper for cigarettes and tea bags.

Flax seed as well as linseed oil are nutritional products widely used in culinary and farmacology.

Flax shives (the non-fibre parts of the stem) are used as fuel and as horticultural mulch. They are also increasingly being used as horse, pet and bird bedding.
